Donald E. Coulson Sr.

Donald Erwin Coulson Sr., age 76, of Berlin, reunited with his loved ones in Heaven on Friday, December 16, 2022.

Donnie was born December 13, 1946, in Berlin, WI, (just minutes before his brother-in-law, Joseph Resop, Jr.) the son of Erwin and Jean Jordan Coulson. He attended Webster Stanley School in Oshkosh, transferring to Berlin Lincoln School in the 5th grade. He was a proud 1966 graduate of Berlin High School.

Losing his hearing as a result of rushed childbirth did not deter Donnie from living his life to the fullest. After high school he attended the International College for the Deaf and Hard of Hearing at Gallaudet University in Washington, D.C. Donnie only came home from college because the students were evacuated for their safety due to riots taking place where students were injured and killed due to the violence.

After returning home, Donnie held several full time jobs to support his family. He was proud to have retired from the Berlin Foundry and being a member of their Old Timers Club. Donnie was active where he was welcomed and could be of help! He was often seen at local Berlin events helping the Kiwanis, Lions Club and the Berlin Veterans Foundation. He also held numerous positions in the Oshkosh Deaf Club. Besides hunting and fishing he also enjoyed camping, 4-wheeling, casino trips and board games! Sequence was a real battle around the campground picnic table - often resulting in him running the game! One of his favorite pastimes was bowling, and he was very proud of the time he bowled a 300!

Don is survived by his son, Donald Coulson Jr.; two grandsons, Austin and Kyle Coulson; one granddaughter, Shila Scharrschmidt; one great-granddaughter, Grace Schiltz; sister, Barbara Resop; sister-in-law, Jean Coulson; special friend, Vicki Simons; and nieces and nephews. Donnie was welcomed home by his parents; infant brother, Conrad Coulson; and brother, Steven Coulson.

Per Donnie’s wishes a private gathering of family and friends will be held at Barbola Funeral Chapel in Berlin. Inurnment will be in Oakwood Cemetery. The family would like to thank Clarity Care Villa in Marshfield for the care, understanding and kindness shown to Donnie during the time he spent with his housemates and staff. Dementia is such a crappy disease. Our hope is that he is reunited with his loved ones in the glorious arms of our Lord free from pain and able to finally experience the sense of sound.
