Marilyn J. Schmudlach

Marilyn Jean Schmudlach, age 85, of Berlin, died peacefully on Wednesday, February 2, 2022, at Patriot Place in Berlin.

She was born September 8, 1936, in Cook County, IL, the daughter of Walter and Helen Frank Grothpietz. Marilyn graduated from Bensenville High School and attended Concordia University in River Forest, IL. On April 12, 1958, she was united in marriage to Walter P. Schmudlach in Bensenville, IL.

During her lifetime Marilyn taught Kindergarten at Zion Lutheran School. She worked 12 years at Camp Restore in New Orleans. She was very active in her church life as a Sunday School teacher, serving on the Altar Guild, Ladies Aid, L.W.M.L., and had started Human Care at St. John Lutheran in Berlin where she and Walter worshiped. In addition to her professional career, Marilyn baled hay on the seven farms she and Walter rented. Above all, she enjoyed raising her children, and tending her flowers.

Marilyn is survived by her husband, Walter; two daughters, Dawn (Rev. John) Krebs and Beth (Ric) Kettner; one son, Mark (Mary Kay) Schmudlach; seven grandchildren; a brother, David Grothpietz; brother-in-law, Duane (Caroline) Schmudlach; and many nieces and nephews. Her parents preceded her in death.

Funeral services will be held on Tuesday, February 8, at 11:00 a.m., at St. John Lutheran Church in Berlin, Rev. Paul Mundinger officiating. Interment will be in Shead Island Cemetery. Friends and relatives may call at the church on Tuesday from 9:00 a.m. until the time of the service. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be given to Human Care at St. John Lutheran Church or Journey Together Service Dogs of Oshkosh. Arrangements have been entrusted to Barbola Funeral Chapel.
