Nancy Lichtenberg

Nancy Jean Lichtenberg joined her Lord and Savior Jesus Christ in Heaven early Saturday morning, September 10, 2016, passing away at Aurora Medical Center in Oshkosh at the age of 76. Nancy was born to Edward and Lorraine Shubert in Oshkosh, WI on October 26, 1939.

Nancy was a professional music teacher for nearly 60 years. She started teaching music while attending Oshkosh High School, balancing school activities while teaching over 40 students a week. Nancy was an accomplished musician, teaching and playing organ, piano, accordion, clarinet, and ukulele. She has touched countless people with her music and has had hundreds of students throughout those years, some of whom have gone on to professional careers. In addition to teaching, Nancy loved listening to music, especially sacred music. Nancy was an organist at St. John Lutheran Church in Berlin and for several other area churches. In 2015, Nancy celebrated her 50th anniversary of playing organ at St. John. Nancy was choir director at St. John for over 40 years. Nancy was very involved in the building committee for the new St. John church building constructed in 1998.

Nancy loved gardening, flowers, collecting angels, watching and feeding birds (although she was actually scared of them), cooking, baking and decorating cakes. She had a special passion for decorating at Christmas time, and loved to set up her beautiful themed Christmas trees, Christmas village and nativity scene. She especially enjoyed spending time with her grandchildren.

Nancy was employed at Bergstrom Paper Company in Neenah as a purchasing secretary and assistant to the president early in her life. She was also a secretary at Peace Lutheran Church in Oshkosh. She worked at the Experimental Aircraft Association and was responsible for the volunteer kitchen for over 20 years until her retirement in 2004. She enjoyed cooking for and meeting people from around the world, and most especially enjoyed the wonderful friendships formed throughout those years. Nancy served as the President of the Friends of the Oshkosh Public Library until her recent retirement due to health issues.

She met her future husband, Vernon Lichtenberg, at Becker Music Center in Oshkosh during high school while both were taking accordion lessons. Vern and Nancy were married on April 24th, 1965 at First English Church in Oshkosh. Nancy and Vern made their home and raised their family on their farm outside of Berlin. Nancy was instrumental in helping her son Russ maintain the family farm.

Nancy is survived by her husband, Vern; her son, Kevin (Debbie) Lichtenberg and their children Alex and Katelyn; her son, Russ (Michelle) Lichtenberg and their children Aleea and Royce; a step-grandson, Nathan Dorst; her son, Ken Lichtenberg and family dog, Menah Jeager; special friend and cousin, Virginia Jungwirth; and many other friends and relatives.

Funeral services will be held Saturday, September 17, 2016 at 11:00 a.m. at St. John Lutheran Church in Berlin, the Rev. Bryan G. Lundquist officiating. Interment will be in St. Paul Lutheran Cemetery. Friends and relatives may call on Friday, September 16 from 4:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. at Barbola Funeral Chapel in Berlin and on Saturday at the church one hour prior to the services.
