Agnes A. Janes

Agnes A. Janes, age 90, of Berlin, passed away peacefully on January 6, 2019, at Juliette Manor in Berlin.

Agnes was born on her grandparents’ farm in the Township of Poy Sippi, Waushara County, to Alfred and Frieda Klick Ziepke. She attended Koro School and graduated from Berlin High School in 1946, where her love of music began in high school band and choir. On August 10, 1947, she was united in marriage to Kenneth Janes at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Auroraville. They lived and raised four children on their farm south of Berlin, and cared for Agnes’s mother there after her father died. While on the farm, she helped by driving tractor, doing milkhouse duties and other chores such as unloading hay. While her first priorities were always home and family, she also took her love for people outside the home, working in customer service roles at many places such as Heidel House and Walmart.

Church was important to Agnes. She was a member of Grace English Lutheran Church in Berlin, where for many years she was active in church functions, including serving on the Church Board, participating in Faith Circle, reading, greeting and singing in the choir. She represented the Township on the Green Lake County Farm Bureau Board and was a member of the Berlin Community Choir. Agnes was also a member of Green Lake County’s Jolly Jills Homemakers Club for 60 years, holding various offices and participating in the State Friendship Chorus. She never missed a concert in which her children performed.

Agnes had many other leisure-time interests. She and Kenneth loved to bowl, and for many years they were members of the Block Pharmacy teams, Lutheran League and Berlin and Green Lake Couples League for Wallace Construction. Evenings often involved working crossword puzzles and cryptograms. She enjoyed taking short trips with Kenneth and family, and especially during the last few years with her daughter, Jean.

She is survived by her three children, Judith (Kenneth) Ireland, Jean Janes and Allan Janes, seven grandchildren; 23 great-grandchildren; three great-great-grandchildren; and special cousin, Carole (Jim) Prochnow. Agnes was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Kenneth; and son, Kenneth Jr.

Visitation will be held on Friday, January 11, from 9:30 a.m. to 11:00 a.m., at Barbola Funeral Chapel in Berlin. Funeral services will be held at Barbola Funeral Chapel at 11:00 a.m., Rev. Ted Johanson officiating. Interment will be in Oakwood Cemetery. Memorials may be directed to Agnesian Hospice Hope.
