Richard Niels “Dick” Fortnum

Richard Niels “Dick” Fortnum, age 84, of Berlin, an accomplished athlete, successful business executive, caring father, doting husband and grandfather, died peacefully at home surrounded by his family on Sunday, February 5, 2023.

He was born November 1, 1938, in Berlin, the son of Niels and Ruth Holly Fortnum. He was a 1956 graduate of Berlin High School. On September 10, 1960, he was united in marriage to Sharon Franz at Berlin United Methodist Church in Berlin. Quoting Dick, “She was the best deal he ever made!”.

Dick was the owner and operator of Johnson-Fortnum Garage in Berlin. He was a former member of Federated Church, and the United Methodist Church. He was a member of Berlin Rotary, Mascoutin Golf Course, the BIDC, BID, and Berlin Lodge #38 F & A M. Dick also served on the Board of Directors for 1st National Bank and Brown-Wilcox.

He is survived by his two sons, Rick (Kelly) Fortnum and Scott (Krassi) Fortnum; seven grandchildren, Kendra Scheifelbein, Jenna Young, Hunter Fortnum, Jake Fortnum, Max Fortnum, Maria Birova and Elena Marinova; and one brother, Ted Fortnum. He was preceded in death by his wife, Sharon, on November 16, 2022; parents; and a brother, Don Fortnum.
