Carol J. Byrne

Carol Jean Byrne, age 73, of Berlin, died peacefully on Sunday, January 15, 2017 at Juliette Manor in Berlin.

She was born August 28, 1943, in Rockford, IL, the daughter of Edwin and Leona Reetz Gatz. Carol was a 1961 graduate of Westfield High School. On June 10, 1967, she was united in marriage to George Byrne at St. James Catholic Church in Neshkoro.

Carol worked as a medical transcriptionist for many years for Dr. L. J. Seward and 30 years at Berlin Memorial Hospital. She served on the City Election Board for many years, volunteered at the Berlin Food Pantry and was a member of Zion Lutheran Church in Neshkoro. Carol loved to garden (“dig in the dirt”) and travel with George to Alaska, Hawaii, Super Bowl 31, many bus trips and to casinos. She and George had wonderful adventures with their “Biloxi” family.

She is survived by her husband, George; sister, Bonnie (John) Gatz-Kagel; aunts, uncle, cousins; friends; special neighbors, the Olsons; and her Godchildren, Troy, Jerry, Steven and Samantha. Carol was preceded in death by her parents; infant brother, Donald Gatz; and step-father, Carl Lang.

Memorial services will be held Saturday, January 28, 2017 at 11:00 a.m. at Zion Lutheran Church in Neshkoro, the Rev. Franklin Giebel officiating. Inurnment will be in St. James Cemetery. Friends and relatives may call on Saturday from 9:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. at the church. Arrangements have been entrusted to Barbola Funeral Chapel of Berlin. Memorials may be directed to Berlin Food Pantry, Zion Lutheran Church and for brain cancer research.
