Howard F. Betler

Howard Franklin Betler, age 96, died peacefully on Friday, January 24, 2014 at Juliette Manor in Berlin. He was born December 22, 1917 in Mayfield, NY, the son of Charles and Ellen Wood Betler. Howard was a graduate of Gloversville High School. On May 27, 1939, he was united in marriage to Ellen Heald in Mayfield, NY. Howard served his country in the U. S. Army in the European Theater during WWII. Howard worked for Mayfield Glove and Midwestern Sport Togs as a glove cutter. He was a member Combat Engineers and a past member of Union Congregational Church. of 290th He is survived by his wife of 74 years, Ellen; four children, Wesley Betler of Norwich, CT, Judith Williams of Berlin, Lincoln “Linc” (Karen) Betler of Berlin and Karen (Ralph II) Thorp of Waterford, CT; five grandchildren, Donald (Dawn) Betler of Berlin, Kathleen (Peter) Blaas of Marion, Paul (Katie) Williams of Eau Claire, Danielle Thorp of Round Lake, IL and Allison Thorp of Waterford, CT; and five great-grandchildren, Makena and Kailee Betler, Kristian Blaas, and Jaden and Gabriel Williams. He was preceded in death by his parents; sister, Caroline Betler; and brothers, David, Fred, Harvey and Roy Betler. Funeral services will be held Wednesday, January 29, 2014 at 11:00 a.m. at Barbola Funeral Chapel in Berlin, the Rev. Scott T. Piper officiating. Inurnment will be in Oakwood Cemetery at a later date. Friends and relatives may call on Wednesday from 10:00 a.m. until the time of services. Memorials may be directed to Agnesian Hospice Hope.
