Lawrence E. Zarnott

Lawrence E. “Larry” Zarnott, age 85, of Berlin, died peacefully on Thursday, August 18, 2016 at Hospice Home of Hope in Fond du Lac.

He was born January 15, 1931, in Oshkosh, the son of Elker and Alice Smith Zarnott. Larry was a 1949 graduate of Oshkosh High School. He graduated from Oshkosh State Teacher’s College in 1953 and earned a Master’s Degree in Educational Administration from UW-Madison in 1960. During his time in college, Larry earned 8 letters in sports, and served as Captain of the basketball and track teams his senior year. On August 29, 1953, he was united in marriage to Nancy Peterik at St. James Episcopal Church in Manitowoc.

Larry first taught at Hilbert High School from 1953-1957. He then moved to Berlin and spent the next several decades in the Berlin school system where he taught English and Social Studies for many years. In August of 1969, he was appointed Berlin Middle School Principal, and served in that capacity until his retirement. He was active in sports, coaching football, basketball, and track. In community activities, he was a member of Grace English Lutheran Church, where he served as secretary on the Church Council, Supt. of the Sunday school program, and was head of the Parish Education Committee. He was Recreational Director for the City of Berlin from 1961-1975. Larry was an active member of Mascoutin Country Club, belonged to Phi Delta Kappa educational fraternity, and the Wisconsin Association of Secondary School Administrators.

He will be forever remembered in the hearts of Bonnie and Mike Benes; Gary, Avery and Cooper Fossum; Lee, Margaret, Kathleen and Mary Claire Zarnott; nephew Bernard "Butch" Schettle; niece Patricia "Patty" Schettle; and special friend, Winnie Franke. Larry was preceded in death by his wife, Nancy, on January 31, 2005; daughter, Jody Zarnott Fossum, on October 3, 2015; sister, Shirley Schettle; and nephew, Mike Schettle. He touched the lives of many.

Funeral services will be held on Saturday, August 27 at 10:00 a.m. at Grace English Lutheran Church in Berlin, the Rev. Scott T. Piper officiating. Interment will be in Liberty Prairie Cemetery in Pickett. Friends and relatives may call on Friday, August 26 from 3:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. at Barbola Funeral Chapel in Berlin and may also call at the church on Saturday one hour prior to the services. A memorial has been established.
