Raymond G. Sprague

Raymond G. Sprague, age 84, of Berlin, died peacefully on Saturday, July 23, 2022.

He was born February 8, 1938, in Sparta, MI, the son of Carl and Mildred Waid Sprague. Ray was a 1955 graduate of Berlin High School and received a bachelor’s degree in Business from Oshkosh State University. Ray served his county in the U.S. Air Force from 1956-1960. On January 24, 1970, he was united in marriage to Valerie Jean Kalupa at Union Congregational Church, Berlin.

Ray retired as a heavy equipment salesman from American State Equipment. He was a past member of Mascoutin Country Club Board of Directors and was honored as an Old Timers Man of the Year. He enjoyed hunting, skiing, traveling and loved boating so much he earned the moniker of Captain Ray. He was an antique car collector of T-birds, and enjoyed taking to the sky as a small engine pilot. Ray was a member of Wells-Krause VFW Post #2925, including their Honor Guard, and Grace English Lutheran Church in Berlin.

He is survived by his wife, Valerie Jean; daughter, Jan (Kurt) Unangst; son, Scott Sprague; three grandchildren, Cordan Unangst, Keenan (Tiffani) Unangst and Kale Unangst; one great-grandson, Kallum Ray Unangst; sister, Sue (George) Egner (their children, Stephanie and Jaclyn (Lucas)); sister-in-law, Tootie Nitzke (her children, Lisa and Frank (Lori)); two brothers-in-law, Clifford “Bud” (Fran) Kalupa (their children, John (Chris), Bernie, Tessie (Sterling), Katie (Mark)) and Daniel (Jean Ann) Kalupa (their children, Anna (Nick), Julie (Trevor)); great-nieces and great-nephews; and special cousin, Helen Burch. Ray was preceded in death by his parents and brother-in-law, Stuart Nitzke.

A gathering of family and friends will be held on Thursday, July 28, from 9:30 a.m. to 11:00 a.m., at Barbola Funeral Chapel in Berlin. Memorial services will be held at 11:00 a.m., at the funeral chapel, Rev. Rebekah Tarras officiating, followed by military honors performed by Wells-Krause VFW Post #2925. Inurnment will be in Bush Cemetery at a later date. Memorials may be directed to Grace English Lutheran Church, Berlin VFW and Berlin Public Library.
