Walter P. Schmudlach

Walter Paul Schmudlach, age 88, of Berlin, died peacefully on Monday, July 18, 2022, at Edenbrook in Oshkosh.

He was born August 24, 1933, in Poy Sippi, WI, the son of Frank and Esther Zahn Schmudlach. Walter was a 1952 graduate of Berlin High School and received a bachelor’s degree from Concordia University in River Forest, IL. On April 12, 1958, he was united in marriage to Marilyn Grothpietz in Bensenville, IL.

Many students will remember Walter as the 6th grade Science and Social Studies teacher for Berlin Area School District. He also worked as construction manager for 12 years at Camp Restore in New Orleans. He enjoyed volunteering his time for St. John Lutheran Church, Laborers for Christ, Tamarack Enterprises and Holy Cross NOLA. In addition to his professional career, he was a home-builder and diesel mechanic. Walter was a member at St. John Lutheran Church in Berlin.

He is survived by his three children, Dawn (Rev. John) Krebs, Mark (Mary Kay) Schmudlach and Beth (Ric) Kettner; seven grandchildren; one brother, Duane (Caroline) Schmudlach; one brother-in-law, David Grothpietz; and many nieces and nephews. Walter was preceded in death by his wife, Marilyn, on February 2, 2022; parents; and sister, Ramona (Wilbur) Tesch.

Visitation will be held on Thursday, July 21, from 9:30 a.m. to 11:00 a.m., at St. John Lutheran Church in Berlin. Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m., at St. John Lutheran Church, Rev. Paul Mundinger officiating. Inurnment will be in Shead Island Cemetery. Arrangements have been entrusted to Barbola Funeral Chapel in Berlin. Memorials may be directed to St. John Lutheran School.
