Margaret E. Griffin
Margaret Edna Korwitz Griffin, age 96, of Berlin, died peacefully with her children around her on Monday, August 31, 2015 at Patriot Place in Berlin.
She was born November 18, 1918, in Berlin, WI, the youngest of three daughters of Otto and Hedwig Post Korwitz. She was a 1936 graduate of Berlin High School and attended Oshkosh Business College. On Mother’s Day, May 12, 1940, she was united in marriage to 1st Lt. Carl Griffin, son of Claude and Theresa Radloff Griffin, at St. John Lutheran Church in Berlin. In her early years, she was employed at Berlin Chapman Company as a bookkeeper and secretary to Frank D. Chapman, President.
Margaret accompanied her husband during his 25 year military career, which included two tours in Puerto Rico and one in Germany. After her husband’s retirement from the Army in 1960, they moved to El Paso, TX. In El Paso, Margaret was employed by Lance Engineers as a bookkeeper and private secretary to O. Paul Lance. After retiring from that position, Margaret taught kindergarten for four years at Jesus Chapel Elementary School.
In 1995, Margaret and Carl moved to Ridge Point Retirement Facility in Minnetonka, MN to be closer to their children. In 2001, they returned to Berlin.
Margaret is survived by her two daughters, Carleen Ashbacher and Pamela Jostes; two sons, Michael (Anne) Griffin and Jerry (Lisa) Griffin; fourteen grandchildren; and nineteen great-grandchildren; two great-great grandchildren; and a sister, Alice Parsons. She was preceded in death by her husband, Lt. Col. Carl Hazen Griffin, on September 9, 2005; parents; sister, Gertrude Loeffler; and two sons-in- law, Jim Ashbacher and Terry Jostes.
Funeral services will be held Friday, September 4, 2015 at 1:00 p.m. at Barbola Funeral Chapel in Berlin, the Rev. Bryan G. Lundquist officiating. Interment will be in Oakwood Cemetery. Friends and relatives may call on Friday from 11:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. at the funeral chapel. Memorials may be directed to Berlin High School Scholarship Fund.
