Paul A. Splittgerber

Paul Arthur Splittgerber, age 76, of Berlin, died unexpectedly at home on Tuesday, July 18, 2023.

He was born September 26, 1946, in Berlin, WI, the son of Edward and Josephine Kapfhammer Splittgerber. Paul was class treasurer and graduated in 1964 from Berlin High School. He attended UW-Oshkosh, Fox Valley Technical College, Moraine Park Technical College and WI State Patrol Academy. On October 30, 1971, he was united in marriage to Nancy Randall at First English Lutheran Church in Oshkosh, Rev. Robert Herder officiated.

In his early years, Paul worked for JC Penney Co. in Berlin. In 1969, he joined the Berlin Police Department, where he faithfully served for almost 40 years, retiring as Senior Police Patrolman. Never sitting idle, Paul also worked for Boyd Ambulance Service and Oakwood Memorials. In 1972, he was a founding member of the Berlin Ambulance Service, attending the very first EMT training class. He continued that service for 34 years.

He was a member of both Green Lake and Waushara County Deputy Sheriffs Associations for 25 years, WI Law Enforcement Officers Association for the last 52 years, Berlin Blue Knights Chapter VII Law Enforcement Motorcycle Club, Fraternal Order of Police Heartland Memorial Lodge #1, Quad Cities Police Auxiliary, Green Lake County Tactical Riot Squad, Berlin Emergency Government, Civil Defense and Emergency Management. Paul was a 1990 recipient of the WI American Legions Police Officers award. He held various positions in Berlin Professional Policemen’s Union #514-B. He was also an advisor for Berlin’s Police and Fire Explorers Post #9927 for 30 years. To round out his civic duties, Paul was a volunteer for American Red Cross and he served and enjoyed 38 years as a WIAA referee. Paul loved to play in local men’s softball leagues, deer hunting, and trips to the casino with Nancy. He especially adored watching his grandchildren’s musical and sporting events.

Paul was proud to operate a lawn care/snow shoveling/garden tilling business. He was confirmed by Rev. Harold Gluth at Grace English Lutheran Church, where he was a long-time active member, serving on Church Council, the 75th Anniversary Committee and several years as a Sunday School teacher. He was currently a member of Light of Christ Lutheran Fellowship in Berlin.

He is survived by his wife, Nancy; daughter, Melody (Dan) Matty; sons, Tim (Mary Jo) Splittgerber, Corey Splittgerber, Bill Lawson and Brad Lawson; five grandchildren, Megan and Dustin Matty, Zachary and Jeremy Splittgerber and Rachel (Karl) Friedrich; four great-grandchildren, Amaya, Knox, Brixlee and Kayden; sisters, Janet (Dennis) Luther and Rita (Otis) Eggen; brother, Eugene (Katherine) Splittgerber; brother-in-law, Charles (Julie) Randall; special friends, Tammi and Yahn Sawallish and their children, Weston and Coralyn; nieces, nephews, friends and his canine companion, Gracie. Paul was preceded in death by his parents and brother-in-law, Wayne (Irene) Randall.

Funeral Services will be held Tuesday, August 1, at 11:00 a.m., at Faith Community Church/Light of Christ Lutheran Fellowship Campus, 200 S. Church Street in Berlin, Rev. Scott T. Piper officiating. Interment will be in Nepeuskun Cemetery. Visitation will be held on Monday, July 31, from 4:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m., at Barbola Funeral Chapel in Berlin, and on Tuesday at the church one hour prior to the service.
