Erwin Coulson, age 93, of Berlin, died peacefully on Wednesday evening, August 7, 2013 at Berlin Memorial Hospital surrounded by his family.
He was born December 18, 1919 in Berlin, WI, the son of George and Ella Randall Coulson. Erwin was a 1937 graduate of Berlin High School and attended Oshkosh Business College for two years. On August 3, 1940, he was united in marriage to Jean Jordan. Erwin served his country in World War II in the U.S. Navy, where he was a Quarter Master 3rd Class. Erwin worked in the Merchant Marine after the war. He returned to Berlin where he worked as a radio operator for the Berlin Police Department and installed the first police radio.
Erwin also opened his own business, now known as Coulson Tax Service, located on
Wisconsin & Marquette St. He has remained active in that business since 1953.
He was Past Commander and held numerous offices for Wells-Krause V.F.W. Post #2925
in Berlin. Erwin was a past member of the Berlin Conservation Club, Berlin Eagles Club,
I.O.O.F., and was a Scout Master for Boy Scout Troup #32. He was an avid sportsman
who loved to hunt and fish, and enjoyed many trips to Canada.
Erwin is survived by three children, Donald Coulson, Barbara Resop, and Stephen (Jean)
Coulson; his grandchildren, Donald Coulson Jr., Michele (Shawn) Cassidy, Joanne (Philip)
Pribnow, Dawn (Douglas) Putzke, Annamae Coulson, and step-grandson Matt Chappa;
many great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild; and one sister, Phyllis Franz.
Erwin was preceded in death by his wife, Jean, on Nov. 19, 2007; a son, Conrad; his parents;
brothers, sisters, and other relatives.
Funeral services will be held on Friday, August 16, at 11:00 a.m. at Barbola Funeral Chapel in
Berlin, the Rev. Brian Beardsley officiating. Interment will follow in Oakwood Cemetery with
graveside honors by the V.F.W. Honor Guard. Friends and relatives may call at the funeral
chapel on Thursday, August 15, from 4:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. and also on Friday one hour prior
to the service. A memorial has been established.
